On Joe Biden
With the news that he will not seek re-election, Joe Biden makes a tough political choice that keeps him in control of the 2024 Presidential election.
Dear Friends,
By all objective metrics, Joe Biden has been a successful president, getting American troops out of Afghanistan, bringing the American economy back from the destructive inflation created by Trump’s ruinously expensive COVID spending, and managing to make the United States the world’s largest producer of oil.
All of this was done at the end of a very long and mixed career in politics. He tried and failed many times, took tough hits and tragic events, but just kept going. When the country needed someone steady to take the car keys away from Trump, Joe Biden stepped up to serve as President in 2020.
Fundamental analysis of the 2024 race supported a strong chance that Joe Biden would win a second term as President. Doing that after having served two terms as Vice President under Barack Obama would have been a political feat superior to FDR in American politics.
The temptation to seek that glory, to want to keep doing a job you are doing well, to be there for the people who supported you in the past, is almost irresistible.
Today, Joe Biden resisted that temptation.
Going out on top is the hardest thing to do if you know you can still succeed. But it’s the right thing to do if you care about those who come after you. Because none of us can last forever in the same role, there comes a time let the next generation of leaders take over.
By continuing to serve as President while his Vice President is seeking election as President, Biden has the best chance at securing the progress he has achieved for the country.
It is unfortunate that it was pressure from his own party that forced him to this choice, but political parties are often dysfunctional things in the modern era, which is why over half of Americans don’t identify with any political party.
Unaligned voters will decide the 2024 election and a clear choice between tyranny and democracy is going to be on the ballot in November.
It is up to all of us to decide how to respond to the situation as it has changed, to ensure that the shining city on a hill never closes its doors to the world or loses the luster of liberty.
Yours truly,
Nick
P.S. There are 107 days until the election.
